Weekly Word: Worship Service

1/30/2022

Fourth Sunday After Epiphany
Scripture: Luke 4:21-30

Faith in Action Idea: Caring Conversation
Talk about what you heard in the Bible text/story. Some questions to guide you:
  1. How do you feel when you want to be part of a group but are not invited to join? Explain.
  2. When have you been challenged to oppose others and speak what you believe?
  3. How has God sustained you during a time you felt unfairly criticized for what you believe?

Faith in Action Idea: Prayer
Holy God, give us confidence to live as a follower of Jesus that others may see in us our faith in you, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Amen.

Faith in Action Idea: Rituals & Traditions
Epiphany is a time for public expressions of the Christian faith. This includes caring for those who are treated poorly, even bullied. Think of people who are picked on or criticized by others. It is an act of the Christian faith to speak up against those bullying others. Light a candle and say a prayer for your own courage to speak for those who are demeaned or otherwise persecuted.

Second Sunday After Epiphany
Scripture: John 2:1-11

Faith in Action Idea: Caring Conversation
Talk about what you heard in the Bible text/story. Some questions to guide you:
Join Pastor Paul as he reviews Augustine's answers to the question 1700 yrs ago.
  1. How do we read the Bible?
  2. What meanings do you see in the sacred scriptures?
  3. How do you see miracles, signs, and symbols?

Faith in Action Idea: Service
Jesus calls us to serve our neighbor in love. Based on the Daily Bible Readings and theme this week, how can you share God’s abundant goodness by using your gifts and talents to care for others?

Faith in Action Idea: Rituals & Traditions
The wedding at Cana reminds us of how the Bible uses weddings and feasts to express the joy that God intends for us. To experience this joy during the Epiphany season, plan a special meal this week and invite others. Begin by reciting Psalm 36:7-8: How precious is your steadfast love, O God! All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. During the meal talk about what these verses mean to you. End by reciting the verses again.

First Sunday After Epiphany
Scripture: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

Faith in Action Idea: Caring Conversations:
Talk or write about what you heard in the Bible text/story.
  1.  When have you received criticism that helped you?
  2.  How can the judgment of another—or of God—be a blessing to you?

Faith in Action Idea: Rituals & Traditions

Jesus’ baptism sets the stage for the beginning of his ministry, just as our baptism establishes our life as a follower of Jesus. When Jesus was baptized, he was also praying. Use prayer as a way to recall and live your baptism.
Dip your fingers into a bowl of water, make the sign of the cross on your or another’s forehead or hand, and say: [I am/You are] baptized and God’s beloved child. Then close by praying the Lord’s Prayer and any other prayers you may wish to add.

Second Sunday of Christmas
Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12

Faith in Action Idea: Caring Conversation
Talk about what you heard in the Bible text/story. Some questions to guide you:
  • In this story, the Magi discover the new king is baby Jesus. What did you discover as you listened to this story?
  • The Magi and Herod react differently to the news of the new Messiah-King. What feelings do they share? What feelings are different?
  • The Magi noticed something in nature (the star) that led them to Jesus. What beautiful or amazing parts of nature make you think of God?
  • On Jan 6th or through this worship service, we celebrate how the star led the Magi to Jesus, and they worshipped him. Who or what in your life has led you to Jesus?
  • The Magi were open and curious about Jesus. They didn’t know what he would be like, but they were eager to learn instead of nervous. What steps can you take to be open and curious about new things in your life?
